Who is Mononcle Michel?
Mononcle Michel is the voice you talk with on MononcleAI. He is an AI character, not a real person: a Quebec uncle who helps you practice speaking Quebec French, out loud, five minutes at a time.
A Quebec uncle who keeps you talking
Picture the uncle who teases you a little, tells it like it is, and is on your side all the same. That is Michel. He is quick, funny and a bit impatient, and warm under the teasing. He will poke fun at a mistake, but he does not talk down to you.
Michel leads the conversation. He opens with a greeting and a question, then keeps the questions coming, so you are not left wondering what to say. If you are stuck, he makes the question easier or gives you two choices to pick from. He keeps his own turns short, so you have time to think and answer.
When you make a mistake, he corrects you in character: he says it the right way, asks you to repeat it and waits for you to try before he moves on. And when you say goodbye, he sends you off with a quick word of encouragement.
How he talks
Michel speaks Quebec French by default, with the everyday words you hear in Québec. A few of them:

He adjusts to you as you talk. With a beginner he slows down, uses short sentences and simple words, and offers choices. With someone who answers easily, he speaks faster and uses more expressions and harder grammar. If you are stuck, he gives you a little English, then goes straight back to French.
He also knows what time of year it is, so the conversation follows the seasons in Québec.
What he likes to talk about
Michel varies what he talks about from one conversation to the next. He might ask about the weather, your weekend plans, poutine and tourtière, hockey, your family and friends, your travels, the music and shows you like, or traditions like la Saint-Jean. If you bring up something else, he goes along with it.

Michel is an AI voice
Michel is not a real person, and nobody is on the other end of the conversation. His voice and everything he says are generated in real time by an AI model from OpenAI, playing the character we created. Like any AI, he can mishear you or get something wrong now and then.
