MononcleAI is a voice conversation app for Quebec French, also called Québécois, the form of Canadian French spoken in Québec. You talk out loud with Mononcle Michel, an AI uncle, right in your browser, five minutes at a time. He asks the questions, you answer in French, and he shows you how people say it in Québec.
Who it is for
MononcleAI is for anyone who wants to get more comfortable speaking French the way it is spoken in Québec. For example:
- You plan to visit, work or live in Québec, and you want to follow what people say and answer back.
- You learned French in school or from a textbook, and everyday Quebec French still sounds fast and unfamiliar.
- You are a beginner and nervous about speaking. Michel slows down, uses simple words, gives you choices and helps in English when you are stuck.
- You already speak French well and want real conversation. Michel speaks faster and brings in more Quebec expressions and harder grammar.
What a conversation with Michel is like
Each session is a 5-minute spoken conversation. The first time you open the app, you can pick a topic: Food & Drink, Daily Life, Hobbies, Quebec Culture or Grammar, or Surprise me to let Michel choose. Here is how a conversation goes:
- Michel starts. He greets you in Quebec French and asks you a question.
- You answer out loud, in French, as well as you can.
- He keeps the conversation going with follow-up questions that start simple and build up as you go. If you bring up something else, he goes along with it.
- When you make a mistake, he shows you how it is said in Québec, asks you to say it back and waits for you to try.
- If you are stuck, he gives you a little English, then goes straight back to French.
For example, if you say you will dîner with friends tonight, Michel might point out that in Québec the evening meal is souper, and ask you to say it.
French subtitles show what Michel says as he says it, and you can turn them off. When the conversation ends, you can read it back with a short review of how it went.
How the two free conversations work
- Your first 2 conversations are free. You do not need to sign up or enter a credit card.
- Each one is a full 5-minute conversation. It runs in your browser, on a computer or a phone. You need a microphone, and there is nothing to download.
- Once you have talked for 5 minutes in a day, the app shows when your next conversation unlocks.
- Free conversations are counted per device.
- After each one, you can read the conversation back with a short review. The full review, with its corrections and the words to learn, comes with a subscription.
- After your second free conversation, you can subscribe: sign in with Google and pick a plan.
